So What Actually Happens in a Hypnotherapy Session?
If you’ve ever wondered what really goes on in a hypnotherapy session, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions I’m asked—and the truth is, it’s probably not what you expect.
Forget the stage shows and swinging watches. Modern clinical hypnotherapy is a calm, collaborative process that’s grounded in psychology and neuroscience, and tailored to you. Whether you’re working through anxiety, building confidence, breaking a habit, or navigating a life change, each session is designed to meet you exactly where you are.
The First Step: A Grounded Conversation
Every session starts with a gentle, supportive chat. We talk about what’s been going on for you, how you’ve been feeling, and what changes you’d like to make. You might be surprised by how solution-focused the conversation is—we won’t spend much time analysing the past. Instead, I’ll ask purposeful, future-focused questions designed to help you clarify your goals and tap into your existing strengths.
I often use NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) techniques here—simple but powerful tools that help reframe unhelpful thought patterns and support new ways of thinking. We might also use scaling, where I ask you to rate how you’re feeling in different areas of your life, helping us both track progress and pinpoint what’s shifting.
What Hypnosis Actually Feels Like
Once we’ve talked things through, we move into the hypnosis part of the session. This is often the bit people feel most uncertain about—so let me demystify it.
Hypnosis is simply a natural, relaxed state of focused attention. You’re just deeply relaxed and inwardly focused, with the thinking, analytical part of your brain (your 'critical faculty') softened, making it easier to take on helpful suggestions and reinforce the changes you want to make.
For some, it feels dreamy and floaty. For others, it’s simply a sense of stillness and calm. You might even compare it to the feeling of being absorbed in a book or a film—you’re not asleep, and you’re not unconscious. You may remember every word I say, or drift in and out. All of these responses are completely normal—and equally effective.
What Clients Often Find Surprising
One of the most surprising things for new clients is how empowering the process feels. Hypnotherapy isn’t something I do to you—it’s something we do together. You’re fully in control throughout, and most people find it’s a gentle, affirming experience. You don’t have to ‘perform’ or ‘get it right.’ Simply showing up with curiosity is enough.
Another common surprise? The results. While hypnotherapy isn’t a magic wand, many clients notice meaningful changes after just a few sessions—often in areas they didn’t expect. Because we’re working with the subconscious, shifts can happen subtly but powerfully.
