Men’s Mental Health Deserves More Space
Let’s be honest - what with everything going on in the world, Men’s Mental Health Week 2025 simply did not get the airtime it deserves, but it can be a great reminder to check in on the men we care about… and maybe even start some conversations that don’t usually happen.
Most of the people who read my blog or come to see me aren’t men. You’re women - partners, daughters, sisters, colleagues - often the ones quietly supporting everyone else. And you notice when someone you love seems distant. When the light’s gone out a bit. When tension builds but not a lot is said.
So this post isn’t just for men. It’s also for those who care about them.
We need to talk about what’s going on under the surface
It’s no secret that men are far less likely to reach out for mental health support - but that doesn’t mean they aren’t struggling. In fact, around 1 in 8 men in the UK report experiencing a common mental health condition such as anxiety or depression, and many more go undiagnosed.
I work with many men in my hypnotherapy practice, and often they’ve only sought help after months (or years) of powering through. It’s not always about a big trauma or crisis. It’s often about pressure, stress, or quietly carrying things that have built up over time. More often than not, it goes hand in hand with physical repercussions such as sleep problems, IBS or panic attacks, and that’s what’s prompted the search for relief.
Hypnotherapy offers a different kind of support
What I love about hypnotherapy is that it doesn’t demand you open up to endless analysis. There’s no pressure to talk. The sessions are relaxed, deeply calming and at the clients’ speed, giving the nervous system a much-needed break from pressure.
We work on whatever’s most important to them - whether that’s stress, low mood, confidence, or some physical symptom that’s down to nervous system overload.
By guiding the brain into a relaxed, focused state (known as the alpha-theta state), hypnotherapy helps reduce stress responses and create space for clearer thinking and emotional reset. It’s not about relinquishing control or ‘being put under’ - it’s about calming the nervous system so the mind can do what it’s naturally designed to do: process, recalibrate, and recover.
Often, clients leave the sessions feeling lighter, calmer and more able to cope. It’s not magic, but it can feel like a BIG relief.
If you’re supporting someone else
Maybe this post makes you think of someone. A partner, a dad, a son, a friend.
If that’s you, I see you. It can be hard, holding the emotional space for others while looking after yourself too.
Sometimes the kindest thing you can do is gently suggest something - then let it go. You can send this post, mention therapy, or even offer to come along to the first session. And then? Leave it up to them. You can lead a horse to water…
And if you’re reading this and you are the one who’s been holding it all in…
You’re not broken and you don’t need fixing. Your nervous system and subconscious mind are doing their utmost to keep it all under control. But if your head feels noisy and your body feels tired, it’s okay to want support.
I offer 1:1 hypnotherapy sessions online and in-person from my practice at Elixir Health & Wellbeing, Wadebridge, North Cornwall. You’re very welcome to book a free Discovery Call if you’d like to explore how it might help.
Let’s make more space for real conversations - this month and always.
